What the publisher says:
Imogen’s husband is a bad man. His ex-wife and his new mistress might have different perspectives but Imogen thinks she knows the truth. And now he’s given her an ultimatum: get out of the family home in the next fortnight or I’ll fight you for custody of our son.
In a moment of madness, Imogen does something unthinkable: she locks her husband in the cellar. Now she’s in control. But how far will she go to protect her son and punish her husband? And what will happen when his ex and his girlfriend get tangled up in her plans?
Sticks and Stones is a deliciously twisting psychological thriller from an unforgettable new voice.
What I say:
As the book opens with the funeral of Phillip there is only one way this book can go. The story itself begins three weeks earlier and covers the build up to the funeral.
Gradually we are introduced to Imogen, Philip’s soon to be ex-wife, Naomi, his current partner and his former wife, Ruby. As the story unfolds we learn more about Phillip and see him through the eyes of the three women who have been subject to his bullying and abuse throughout their relationships.
What kept me reading was the densely plotted storyline. I was intrigued that one of the women had a different view to the others even though it seemed immensely unlikely that Phillip would have been any different with her. As the book opens with the funeral we know we are looking out for Phillip’s death but the plotting ensured that even when I thought I had worked it out another twist came along to turn my ideas on their head.
A book that can genuinely call itself a page turner.
